EU Leaders Agree on Patent Package

By streamlining system, Parliament hopes to cut costs and encourage filings.

“The unified patent package will provide uniform legal protection in 25 European countries.”

After almost 40 years of talks, E.U. leaders agreed to cut patent fees by 80 percent, making the European Union more competitive with the United States and Japan in attracting inventors.

“Intellectual property must not stop at borders,” says parliament member Bernhard Rapkay, who led group that developed the regulation setting up the unified system. “The path towards the introduction of the E.U. patent was long and troubled, but ultimately it has been worth the effort.”

Many Of WSJ's Technology Innovation Award Winners Focus On Improving Lives.

An article appearing in the Wall Street Journal (10/16, Leger, Subscription Publication) reports on the publication's Technology Innovation Awards. Many of the winners in this year's awards focused on improving and saving lives, including an anti-tuberculosis initiative for India. From a pool of 536 applications, the judges selected 37 winners and runners-up.

        Vidacare Wins Bronze Award. The Wall Street Journal (10/16, Wang, Subscription Publication) reports that Vidacare Corp. Is this year's Bronze winner of the publication's Technology Innovation Awards. The company also won the Medical-Devices category. Vidacare's OnControl Bone Marrow System aims to lessen the pain of bone-marrow biopsy by allowing physicians to more precisely and quickly perform the procedure. In a separate report (10/16), the Journal provides additional coverage of Vidacare and the runner-ups in the medical devices category.

        Operation ASHA Wins Healthcare IT Category. The Wall Street Journal (10/16, Subscription Publication) reports that Operation ASHA emerged the winner in the category of healthcare IT. Operation ASHA, a nonprofit organization, utilizes grass-roots efforts coupled with fingerprint and computer technology, to make sure that disadvantaged people take the full course of tuberculosis medication. The article notes that untreated tuberculosis is one of India's biggest public health problems.

        Cystic Fibrosis Treatment Wins Medicine And Biotech Category. The Wall Street Journal (10/16, Subscription Publication) reports that Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc.'s Kalydeco (ivacaftor) was the winner in the Medicine and Biotech category. The medicine is meant to treat cystic fibrosis in people that have a specific type of genetic mutation. In the future, Kalydeco, which restores the functioning of a protein, may help some cystic-fibrosis patients with fertility, nutrition, and bone-disease problems.

HHS Announces the First 26 Health Care Innovation Awards

The Department of Health and Human Services has announced the first round of organizations to receive funding through the Health Care Innovation Awards.

Authorized by the Affordable Care Act, the Health Care Innovation Awards will fund up to $1 billion in grants for projects that aim to improve care and lower costs for people enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program, as well as enhance the health care workforce. This first round of awards will support 26 innovative projects nationwide, which received a total of $122.6 million, and are projected to reduce health spending by $254 million over the next three years.

Several projects that received funding are focused on implementing strategies to improve care transitions to reduce hospital readmissions. These strategies include training and making use of care transition specialists and care management teams, implementing evidence based care transition programs for high-risk patients, and utilizing telehealth and other technology to coordinate care.

HHS innovator: Grants, challenges are growing healthcare entrepreneurs - from MedCityNews

When you hear “government” and “healthcare,” you probably think Medicare, Medicaid and other government programs directed at the general public.

Wil Yu

Wil Yu, director of innovations at the Department of Health and Human Services in the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, by contrast, wants to build an entrepreneurial ecosystem in the private sector to solve big healthcare problems.

His tools? Data liberacion and app challenges that are designed to help entrepreneurs think up and build the next innovative solution for problems facing the industry.

In his government job, the former investment banker and equity analyst:

• Leads several innovation grant programs and created “Investing in Innovations;“
• directs the Strategic Health IT Advanced Research Projects program;
• serves as a senior adviser at the CMS Innovation Center and on the HHS Innovation Council;
• manages the DC-to-VC program;
• and co-founded the Federal mHealth Collaborative.

He also has helped with many challenges that range from heart health to hospital-to-home transitions.
Yu talked with MedCity News about gaming and health, access to data, and the DC-to-VC program.

UNC’s Emerging Company Showcase highlights new healthcare technologies, from MedCityNews

Innovation is brewing in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill held its annual Emerging Company Showcase this week, an event that gives companies spun out of the university the chance to strut their stuff in an eight minute presentation before an audience of researchers, entrepreneurs and potential investors or partners.

This year’s showcase featured a total of 14 companies; eight companies in the scientific track, which encompassed technologies that have applications in healthcare or scientific work. Many of the companies have received support from Carolina KickStart, a UNC program funded by the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences (TraCS) Institute. Carolina KickStart’s role is to provide support UNC faculty members who are looking to commercialize new biomedical technologies. Here are the scientific companies that presented at the event.

Augment Medical: Augment Medical aims to improve the ability of disabled patients to use the nurse call system. The Joint Commission, a hospital certification and accreditation body, has called for the hospitals to make the nurse call system accessible to all patients regardless of cognitive or physical ability by the third quarter of 2012. On Augment’s system, raising an eyebrow is all it takes to activate a facial sensor that triggers a call to the nurse. Future versions will have eye-tracking capabilities that bring the calling function to a tablet computer. The company was founded by graduate students in the joint departments of biomedical engineering at North Carolina State University and UNC. “We want to be the standard of care for The Joint Commission,” said Timothy Martin, Augment’s president and co-founder. The company last year was awarded a $7,000 grant from NC TraCS. The company is looking to raise $750,000 from investors or strategic partners.

GeneCentric Diagnostics: Taking a personalized medicine approach to cancer treatment, GeneCentric is developing new diagnostics to match a drug to individual patients in order to maximize the efficacy of cancer treatments and reduce adverse events. GeneCentric’s initial focus is nonsmall cell lung cancer, or NSCLC. The company’s diagnostic tests for the subtype of NSCLC, which is important because some currently approved drugs as well as drugs still in development work differently depending on the subtype. “We wouldn’t know which drug would work if we didn’t have the right diagnostic,” said Myla Lai-Goldman, CEO and co-founder. The company is based on research from Dr. Neil Hayes and Chuck Perou of UNC.GeneCentric raised $250,000 from Hatteras Venture Partners last year.
