Surgeon Performs First Pinless Knee Replacement Surgery Using iPod.

USA Today (12/4, Rudavsky) reports, "A surgeon in Indiana performed the first operation in the state Tuesday with an iPod-based navigation system that allowed him to check his surgical incisions and decisions, doing more accurate and less invasive work." Dr. Timothy Williams of St. Francis Health performed the first pinless knee replacement surgery in the US, using the Dash Smart Instrument Technology, which "gave the doctor an in-depth 3-D view of the inside of his patient's knee." The FDA-approved treatment uses "probes that are attached to the iPod [which] help the surgeon visualize where he's operating and the navigation camera." The technology is similar to other equipment but costs significantly less and is more mobile than larger instruments.
