We're pleased at the interest researchers, patients and other stakeholders have shown so far in our efforts to identify key research questions in five topic areas we're considering as the subjects of our first targeted funding announcements. And we hope to see even more interest and input in coming weeks.   On March 1, we launched a series of ad hoc multi-stakeholder workgroups to help us refine questions for our initial set of targeted research topics. Three of the five workgroups have since convened, but there are still ways for you to get involved. You can:   Join one of our two remaining workgroups via webinar. PCORI needs your help: launching ad hoc workgroups on March 1 -seek input from the healthcare community

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) needs your help as we launch a series of ad hoc workgroups on March 1 to seek input from the healthcare community on refining our initial set of targeted research topics for funding. The workgroups, made up of researchers, patients, and other stakeholders, will meet one time each in March and April. They will provide input to our staff and Board of Governors on the critical research questions that should be answered within each of the five topics, which are: Treatment Options for Severe Asthma in African-Americans and Hispanics/Latinos - March 1 Treatment Options for Uterine Fibroids - March 5 Preventing Injuries from Falls in the Elderly - March 12 Treatment Options for Back Pain - March 21 Obesity Treatment Options in Diverse Populations - April 16 Each workgroup's proceedings will be open to the public via webinar/teleconference. We welcome your comments and suggested research questions via email (targetedPFAworkgroup@pcori.org) and Twitter (@PCORI). We also welcome comments, suggestions, and input from interested individuals for up to two weeks before and after each meeting through our website. You'll find a full list of workgroup meetings and information on how submit input and register for their associated webinars on our site's events page. Our Board approved the development of five targeted funding announcements at its November 2012 meeting. Three topics were identified at that time and two more were identified in January. This accelerated approach to the development of targeted funding announcements will jump-start our long-term strategy to generate and prioritize specific research topics, starting with questions solicited directly from patients and stakeholders. We hope you take the opportunity to participate in one of our workgroup meetings. PCORI approves 25 awards, totaling $40.7 million over three years, to fund patient-centered CER

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) has approved its first primary research projects. PCORI today announced the approval of 25 awards, totaling $40.7 million over three years, to fund patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research projects under the first four areas of its National Priorities for Research and Research Agenda.

All proposals were approved by PCORI's Board of Governors pending a business and programmatic review by PCORI staff and completion of a formal award contract.   The approved research projects, based at institutions in 17 states, resulted from PCORI's first cycle of primary research funding announcements issued May 22. PCORI received nearly 500 applications. The approved projects were selected through a competitive, multi-stage review process that incorporated patients, caregivers and other stakeholders in the evaluation of proposals. Applications were evaluated on scientific merit, engagement of patients and other stakeholders, methodological rigor and fit within PCORI's research priorities and research agenda.   The projects approved for funding include those that will study ways to improve care for people with such health problems as bacterial and viral infections, cardiovascular disease and stroke, certain cancers, chronic kidney disease, chronic pain, depression and other serious mental illness, and pediatric diabetes, as well cross-cutting proposals investigating how to improve care for people with multiple conditions. PCORI is currently looking for individuals who are not usually represented in scientific review groups to serve as reviewers of our funding applications. We value your experience and hope you will consider becoming a reviewer or sharing this opportunity with others who might be interested. As a PCORI reviewer, you will work side-by-side with scientists on review committees, adding insight that ensures the research we fund reflects the interests and views of patients, while remaining scientifically rigorous. Review panels are comprised of two scientific reviewers and at least one patient and one other stakeholder who score and critique applications for impact. Patient and Stakeholder reviewers evaluate the applications for the potential impact of the research, the patient-centeredness, ensure that patients and stakeholders are well represented in the proposal and that these groups are meaningfully included on research team. Scientific reviewers will assess the scientific merit and the potential clinical impact of the proposed research.   Patient Reviewers include patients who have or have had a specific condition, family members, or unpaid caregivers. Other Stakeholder reviewers include representatives of patient & caregiver organizations, clinician & clinician organizations, organizational providers, purchasers, payers, industry, researchers, policymakers, training institutions, and others who can bring insight.   Reviewer applications must be submitted by Friday, November 9 for participation in the review of Cycle II applications, which will be considered early next year. PCORI is moving toward greater specificity in the research it will fund

A new Health Affairs Blog post details how - via two "complementary but equally critical paths" that will build a "robust portfolio of patient-centered outcomes research that will address the unmet needs of patients, caregivers, clinicians and other health care stakeholders."   PCORI Executive Director Joe Selby, MD, MPH, and PCORI staff scientist Rachael Fleurence, PhD, describe each path, one a broad "investigator-initiated" funding process and the other a more directed "patient- and stakeholder-initiated" approach.   The first, launched when we issued our first broad PCORI Funding announcements in May, "leverages the broad research community's wisdom, but brings patients and stakeholders into the process by requiring they be included as meaningful part of research teams and including them in the application review process."   But recognizing that this approach could miss important questions that matter to patients, Selby and Fleurence note, PCORI initiated the second approach, which "directly involves patients and other stakeholders in generating questions that address specific problems identified as having a significant impact on them and the health care system as a whole."   You can link to the complete blog post from the  PCORI Blog on our website.   Tell us what you think of our plans for "getting specific" by posting a comment on the PCORI Blog.   About PCORI The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) is an independent, non-profit organization authorized by Congress. September 17, 2012 PCORI today launched its second cycle of funding requests to support $96 million in comparative clinical effectiveness research that will give patients and those who care for them the ability to make better-informed health care decisions. As with the first funding cycle, which opened in May, these PCORI Funding Announcements (PFAs) correspond to four of the five areas of focus outlined in its National Priorities for Research and Research Agenda: Assessment of Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options - for projects that address critical decisions that patients, their caregivers and clinicians face with too little information. Improving Healthcare Systems - for projects that address critical decisions that face health care systems, the patients and caregivers who rely on them, and the clinicians who work within them. Communication and Dissemination - for projects that address critical elements in the communication and dissemination process among patients, their caregivers and clinicians. Addressing Disparities - for projects that will inform the choice of strategies to eliminate disparities. June 11, 2012 The deadline to submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) for the first cycle of funding announcements issued by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) is Friday, June 15. An LOI is required for anyone who wishes to submit an application. The LOI simply must convey the intent of an organization or individual to submit a complete application by July 31.
